Right now, the FDA is recalling dry shampoo aerosol products made by Unilever. The hair products may include elevated levels of benzene, which can cause cancer. The brands included in this recall are Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI, and Tresemme. Unilever says it has not received any reports of any problems, but they are recalling the products out of caution. Unilever is asking that you immediately stop using the product and contact the company for reimbursement.

Benzene is a commonly found chemical in gasoline and cigarette smoke. The chemical can be absorbed by breathing the chemical when its present in the air. It can also be absorbed into your body by touching petroleum products or eating or drinking contaminated food. According to the CDC, signs that you’ve been exposed to high levels of benzene include dizziness, vomiting, and unconsciousness. More severe cases can result in serious illness or death.

The thought of a chemical in a product you use on a regular basis being cancerous can be concerning. Just last week, A study revealed that a chemical in hair straightening products has a link to uterine cancer. These hair straightening products include chemical relaxers and pressing products. The study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, estimated of the women who did not use the hair straightening products only a 1.6% was diagnosed with uterine cancer. 4% of the women who frequently used the products were diagnosed with uterine cancer by age 70. The study also found the cancer was most prominent in black women.

If hair products continue to reveal toxic chemicals that could attack our health, what are the alternatives to nice looking clean hair? There are some companies working to provide fully organic products for the women who doesn’t have time to make her own products. Earlier this month, The Good Trade listed some healthy hair care brands to try. On the list was Prose, 100% Pure, JVN Hair, and True Botanicals.
