The idea of a flying electric car is cool, no doubt, but is it realistic to actually develop one that gets off the ground? Yes, a company called Alef is getting closer to introducing its “Model A,” the world’s first electric flying car, which can drive 200 miles and fly 110 miles.

As for whether this space-age toy will be affordable, the starting price is $300K, and that number is not stopping people from throwing down deposits. Already 2,500 deposits have been taken, generating $750 million in revenue from preorders, and businesses are getting in line to sell them, knowing what a hot commodity they will be.

The company has been working on this project for eight years, and the actual production of the vehicles is scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of 2025.  Deliveries will arrive shortly after.

“We’re excited to see such strong initial demand for the Alef flying car. We are thankful for the notes of gratitude and inspiration we received with some of the pre-orders. We still have a road to go before starting deliveries, but where we’re going, we don’t need roads,” said CEO Jim Duchovny.

If you can’t afford the $300k for a flying car and can be patient, the company is working on a $35,000 version called the “Model Z,” due out in 2035. That one will have 300 miles of flying power, meaning you could buzz from LA to Vegas or New York to DC on a single charge.

There is a bit of a space race going on with several companies working on prototypes of their flying car.  Chinese EV maker XPeng was the first eVTOL that received a flight permit in China, and American company Moroni Aerospace was the first to test pilot a two-seater eVTOL in the U.S.
