The fallout continued Monday from a Super Bowl week accident that changed lives forever.
Britt Reid, a son of Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, was charged with felony DWI in a Feb. 4 car crash that critically injured 5-year-old Ariel Young.
If convicted, Reid would be facing a max prison sentence of seven years.
His life is altered but Ariel Young’s is shattered, along with those of her family, because her brain injuries are such that she still can’t walk or speak, and may face medical issues the rest of her life.
The family’s attorney Tom Porto told the Kansas City Star on Monday that the girl was released from the hospital April 2 and is being treated at her home. She is being fed through a feeding tube.
Police say Reid’s truck slammed into two vehicles on the side of a highway entrance ramp near Kansas City’s NFL training complex next to Arrowhead Stadium. Analysis of the crash indicated that Reid, 36, was driving 83.9 mph just before the collision.
Reid, 36, surrendered to police and later was released after posting $100,000 bond. As part of his bond release, Reid was ordered to not consume alcohol or visit any establishment where alcohol is the primary item sold.
Among other directives, he is subject to random drug testing and must use alcohol and GPS monitoring devices.
A former Chiefs assistant, Reid no longer is employed by the team.
Police had previously said Reid admitted to investigators to having had “two or three drinks” along with prescribed Adderall before the crash.
The Chiefs’ Monday statement said, in part: “(The organization) remains steadfast in our concern for all who have been impacted by this tragic accident. Our prayers are focused on Ariel’s continued healing and recovery.”
