According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), suicide is among the leading causes of death in the United States.

Based on recent data, suicide in some populations is on the rise.

Suicide is the 12th leading cause of death overall in the United States, taking the lives of over 45,900 people.

Suicide rates increased by 30% between 2000–2018, and declined in 2019 and 2020, according to the CDC.

Someone commits suicide every 11 minutes.

Besides the tragic reality that people are killing themselves every 11 minutes, there is an increasing number of people who are thinking about or attempting suicide.

In 2020, approximately 12.2 million American adults seriously thought about suicide.

An additional 3.2 million planned a suicide attempt, and 1.2 million attempted suicide, according to the CDC.

Suicide affects men at a higher rate than women.

In 2019, the rate was 3.8 times higher for men than women, according to the CDC.

The suicide rate for men increased by 28% in the last twenty years.

Of the 47,511 people who died by suicide in 2019, about 50% of deaths involved a gun.

Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among youth between the ages of 10-14 and 25-34.

Veterans, people who live in rural areas, sexual and gender minorities, middle-aged adults, and tribal populations disproportionately commit suicide.

These factors include substance misuse, job or financial problems, relationship problems, physical or mental health problems, and/or easy access to lethal means.

Additionally, people who have experienced violence, including adverse childhood experiences (such as physical abuse), bullying, or sexual violence, have a higher suicide risk. These groups may also be impacted by other health disparities and struggles.

Consider this: More than 54% of American children are suffering from one or more chronic illnesses

Approximately 1 in 15 high school students attempt suicide every year.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth aged 15-24.

One out of every 53 high school students reports having made a suicide attempt that was serious enough to be treated by a doctor or a nurse. For each suicide death among young people, there may be as many as 100 to 200 suicide attempts.

Those involved in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems, the LGBTQ community, American Indians/Alaska Natives, and military service members are more likely to commit suicide amongst this youth group.

There were nearly twice as many suicides (45,979) in the United States as there were homicides (24,576).
