It is no secret that the role of a parent is challenging, especially amongst this generation. Being a parent is probably one of the biggest leadership challenges anyone can take on.

However, if you are not a parent, that doesn’t necessarily mean the leadership insight presented here is not for you. You will be interacting with the next generation, and it is important that you understand how you can help in the formation of young boys and girls growing up.

This generation is in desperate need of parents who are willing to be more authoritative than the “cool parent.” Kids need parents who are willing to say “no.” Parents who not only understand the dangers of handing smartphones to their kids as a means of distraction but who are present and courageous enough to be involved and not allow unlimited access to social media and the internet.

I am not friends with my kids. Once they reach adulthood, maybe. I must parent them first.

We need parents who will hold their kids accountable to high standards. High standards – what does that mean? I am not talking about getting straight A’s, making the varsity team, scoring points, etc.

Here are some of the high standards parents can hold their children to:

  1. Respecting others – treating others like children of God
  2. Ownership – owning their mistakes, growing and learning from them
  3. Humility – understanding life is about more than just them
  4. Resilience – being able to come back from failures and push through adversity
  5. Honesty – tell the truth even when it means they might have consequences

Really focus on emphasizing these attributes to your kids and praising them when results are established.

Be Courageous. Be the leader God has created you to be.  Until next time, keep growing, keep learning, keep leading.
