An absolutely horrific event occurred to a man who had a routine rhinoplasty procedure at a private clinic in the town of Tarapoto, Peru, and his family wants answers and justice. Undoubtedly, they deserve it since 40-year-old Luis Fernando Davila Castaneda was declared brain dead after the surgeon allegedly left a piece of medical equipment inside him that ended up in his brain.

An x-ray revealed a small metal clamp in his brain tissue.  That was enough to cause irreversible brain damage just days after his procedure, and the man died in intensive care on July 7.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office immediately opened an investigation into how this possibly could have occurred. Peruvian National Police attempted to interview the surgeon who performed the rhinoplasty, but he was on a business trip to Lima.

The victim’s family has filed a complaint accusing the clinic of negligence.  “We hope the Police and the Prosecutor’s Office will thoroughly investigate the matter to determine who is responsible,” said Hector Quintana, an uncle of the victim.

Castaneda fell ill shortly after the procedure and was taken to a hospital, but it was too late.

Worse-case scenarios like this are rare but happen more often than you would think in foreign countries. There are published stories about a woman from China who woke up to find that part of her ear was missing after having a nose job.

In Turkey, a woman lost her legs after undergoing a nose job three years ago. Doctors sent her home, and she developed a high fever.  She was told repeatedly that there was nothing to worry about, but her condition worsened, and a week later, she went back to the hospital because her legs had turned black.  She had to have both legs amputated after contracting blood poisoning.
