Georgia Senate candidates Kelly Loeffler and Raphael Warnock took the stage on Sunday evening for a nationally televised debate as the runoff election in Georgia is now less than a month away and early voting begins next Monday.
The debate, hosted by the Atlanta Press Club and moderated by Atlanta Fox 5 anchor Russ Spencer, featured three rounds of questions and closing statements from each candidate.
Republican Kelly Loeffler was asked about the ongoing legal battles in Georgia over potential voter fraud and President Trump’s accusations of election fraud, saying “It’s vitally important that Georgians trust our election process, and the president has every right to every legal recourse, and that’s what’s taking place.”
Loeffler also called out third-party groups who have reportedly been trying to register out-of-state voters; one of those groups has ties to Warnock. “It’s very clear that there were issues in this election. There are 250 investigations open, including an investigation into one of my opponent’s organizations for voter fraud,” Loeffler said. “We have to make sure that Georgians trust this process.”
Democratic nominee Warnock all but refused to answer a question about court packing for the U.S. Supreme Court by saying, “I’m really not focused on it.”
As for the other runoff race in Georgia, Republican David Perdue refused to debate Democratic Challenger Jon Ossoff after the two held a pair of forums before the Nov. 3 election. Ossoff did appear in a 30-minute forum prior to Loeffler-Warnock, where he was questioned by reporters as he stood with an empty podium representing Perdue about 12 feet away.
