American Airlines is stepping into the 21st century, going ultra modern with a big-time purchase of 20 supersonic jets that will zip passengers from Miami to London in a little over four hours. How about a trip from Los Angeles to Hawaii that takes less than it takes to watch an NFL game? That sounds pretty good.

Boom Supersonic is a brand new aerospace startup manufacturing these speedy aircraft that can ferry between 65 and 80 passengers at Mach 1.7. That’s roughly 1,300 mph, twice as fast as planes currently fly. American is cutting a check for up to 20 of these Overture aircraft and could grab 40 more if they need them.

There’s one little problem; the planes aren’t built yet. It will be a couple of years before the planes are made, and don’t expect to see them in the sky until 2029.

If then.  There’s one other little problem: the little technicality that Boom has yet to identify who the engine manufacturer will be for this project.  Rolls Royce is a possibility.

You’ve got work to do, Boom.  United Airlines announced a deal last year that they want 15 of these planes too.

Save up if and when the seats become available for a supersonic flight across the ocean.  Tickets will cost between $4,000 and $5,000 for a flight from NYC to London.

Here’s what Boom CEO Blake Scholl told the Associate Press.

“There are tens of millions of passengers every year flying in business class on routes where Overture will give a big speed-up, and airlines will be able to do it profitably.”

Get the planes built, Mr. CEO; I’ll be a passenger.
