During this inflationary period that Joe Biden’s administration has guided the country into, prices are up on almost every product, including rare baseball cards.

In fact, a new record was set for the sale of the most expensive card ever.  The old record wasn’t just broken; it was annihilated, vaporized, destroyed, and crushed. Someone paid a mind-boggling $12.6 million for a 1952  Mickey Mantle card.  For that kind of money, you’d think it came with a Rolls Royce and luxury condo in New York City, but no, that’s just the cost of one single card.

It practically doubled the old record, so the buyer damn well wanted this card.  It’s also now the most expensive piece of sports memorabilia ever sold, beating the $9.3 million someone spent on Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” soccer jersey.

Why such a high price for the Mantle card? For one thing, it was in pristine condition, graded as “Mint+9.5.”

This is a Topps card from Mantle’s rookie season.

Here’s a quote from Chris Ivy, the director of sports auctions for Heritage.

“We always knew this card would shatter records and expectations. But that doesn’t make it any less of a thrill to be part of an auction during which a single item breaks the eight-figure threshold for the first time. It’s an extraordinary accomplishment for our wonderful team of sports experts at Heritage Auctions. And, of course, we could not have done it without our consignor, Anthony Giordano, who put his trust in Heritage to bring this amazing card to market.”

The card is 70 years old, and it’s astonishing that it could remain in such good condition for seven decades, but it paid off big time for the owner.
