The Clancy Mistrial Keeps Getting MESSIER

On the PBD Podcast, the Home Team reacts to Gov. Ron DeSantis saying Florida would provide “asylum” if the lone holdout juror from the Lindsay Clancy trial were harassed. The remark followed intense scrutiny of the juror after the September 4 mistrial.
DeSantis wrote that if the juror were being harassed, Florida would provide “asylum” and welcome him. The Clancy trial ended September 4 after seven days of deliberations and an 11-1 split, with eleven jurors favoring a finding that she was not criminally responsible.
The word “asylum” was political rhetoric, not a legal immigration offer. Federal asylum is protection for qualifying noncitizens facing persecution abroad; a Massachusetts U.S. citizen moving to Florida would not be receiving asylum in that legal sense.
