“Mayday, mayday. We’re descending 10,000 feet per minute.”

Those were among the final words from the pilot of a private Learjet that crashed in Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday, killing all nine people on board. The jet was flying from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas.

In air traffic control audio released after the crash, the pilot calmly reports ice building up on the aircraft, an outside temperature of minus 47 degrees Celsius, and moderate turbulence. Moments later her voice changes as the jet begins to fall, and she declares a mayday. The plane crashed in a residential area, just feet from homes and businesses.
