The city of Newark, New Jersey got scammed by a notorious Indian con man.

The city was eager to partner with the “United States of Kailasa”, described as a small, independent Hindu nation.

The “delegation” flew out to Newark for a cultural exchange. The nation did have website. They promoted Swami Nithyananda as their leader, who has been charged with rape and child abduction, and was known to be in another nation, avoiding the charges. He was also the centerpiece of a Discovery channel documentary called “My Daughter Joined a Cult”. The website called Nithyananda “The Reviver”.

The event was certainly a big to-do. Democratic mayor Ross Baraka hosted the delegation and had an official signing ceremony, declaring the two locales to be official sister cities.

Mayor Baraka declared proudly, ““I pray that our relationship helps us to understand cultural, social, and political development and improves the lives of everybody in both places.”

One would expect, out of respect to the new sister city, that they’d do extensive research before the big exchange. Perhaps researching food, culture, even commonalities with Newark.

But if anyone googled anything about Kailasa, they’d realize it’s not a real nation. It’s not like it’s an undeclared independent nation. It purely doesn’t exist, and exists nowhere on a map. Just another moment of governmental incompetence and laziness. Let’s just hope there isn’t anything worse on the horizon.
