Russian President Vladimir Putin has chimed in on the 2020 United States presidential election and his comments definitely send mixed messages. Putin attacked Joe Biden for his “sharp anti-Russian rhetoric” but also praised the former VP and current Democratic presidential nominee in comments to Russian state television.

In his remarks, Putin said, “The Democratic Party is traditionally closer to the so-called liberal values, closer to social democratic ideas.” The Russian President went on to connect the Democrats with Communism, a comparison that you’d think any American presidential candidate would try to distance themselves from. “And it was from the social democratic environment that the Communist Party evolved,” Putin continued.

Putin knows plenty about communism. As a former member of the Soviet Communist party for 16 years, he was a Foreign Intelligence Officer and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. As he puts it, “I was a rank-and-file member, but it can be said that I believed in the party’s ideas. I still like many of these left-wing values. Equality and fraternity. What is bad about them? In fact, they are akin to Christian values.” He went on to say, “Yes, they are difficult to implement, but they are very attractive, nevertheless. In other words, this can be seen as an ideological basis for developing contacts with the Democratic representative.”

In the first presidential debate of the 2020 election, Biden referred to Trump as “Putin’s puppy,” which Putin took as a compliment, as he said it “actually enhances our prestige, because they are talking about our incredible influence and power.”

Putin once again denied meddling in U.S. elections, while U.S. intelligence agencies continue to report that Russia is using a variety of measures to influence the upcoming election.
