On the eve of the election, there has been speculation that Donald Trump plans to declare victory on Election Night if he takes the lead over Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden. The Trump campaign quickly dismissed those reports, as the president would need to have fairly large leads in a number of states to make that announcement.
In many ways the election boils down to the swing states of Florida, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. States like Georgia, Arizona, Iowa, Michigan and Ohio could also be included in that mix and make a path to victory more likely for either candidate if they all start falling towards one nominee.
Many experts are pointing towards the large number of mail-in ballots this election year as a reason to believe we will not have a clear winner on Election Night.
The mail-in ballots are expected to take days to count, and President Trump feels that leaves room for problems. “I think it’s a terrible thing when ballots can be collected after an election. I think it’s a terrible thing when people or states are allowed to tabulate ballots for a long period of time after the election is over, because it can only lead to one thing. I think there is great danger to it, and I think a lot of fraud and misuse can take place.” Trump told reporters in Pennsylvania “We’re going to go in the night of–as soon as the election is over–we’re going in with our lawyers.”
Reports throughout the election season have indicated that in-person voting will favor Trump, while mail-in ballots trend towards Biden.
