In 2019, a massive fire gutted the roof of Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, but thankfully the landmark is on schedule to reopen to churchgoers and the general public in 2024.
The fire was so intense and destructive that the clean-up phase of the restoration project has finally come to a conclusion. So that means later this summer, they can actually get to work on rebuilding the church.
You may remember the scene three years ago when the fire sent the spire crashing down. Bystanders looked on in shock and horror, the same reaction millions of people had watching it in real-time on tv.
French culture minister Rima Abdul Malak told the media that the project was on schedule.
“We are confident that 2024 will be the year a large part of this work is completed, the year of the re-opening of the cathedral to worshippers and to the public,” Abdul Malak said as she visited the site.
Once French officials got over the shock of witnessing the cathedral, which dates back to the 12th-century burn, they immediately announced plans to rebuild the church to be bigger and better than it was before. The goal was to have it open in time for the start of the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris.
The 315-foot spire will be rebuilt, restoring the look of the church, which had its original spire erected in the mid 1800’s.
