Pornography website Pornhub has suspended its services in the state of Texas in protest of its new age verification law which requires users to present government-issued identification to access the site’s content library.

Anyone who attempts to access the website with a Texas IP address will instead see a statement page explaining why Pornhub chose to disable access, with a call to action in which the company asks users to contact their representatives and complain about the law.

“Unfortunately, the Texas law for age verification is ineffective, haphazard, and dangerous,” the statement reportedly read. “Not only will it not actually protect children, but it will also inevitably reduce content creators’ ability to post and distribute legal adult content and directly impact their ability to share the artistic messages they want to convey with it.”

The parent company of Pornhub, Aylo (formerly MindGeek), also blocked access to its other porn sites, like Brazzers, YouPorn, Men.com, and others.

Last year, Pornhub sued Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in 2023 to block a state law that was set to require porn sites to enhance age verification mechanisms and display health warnings. Texas also sued Aylo, claiming that it violated its age verification law, which required users to show government-issued identification.

Texas now joins Montana, North Carolina, Louisiana, Utah, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Virginia as a state in which Aylo has blocked its services in retaliation to similar laws.

As reported in April 2023, Pornhub and its parent company were acquired by criminal defense lawyer and ordained rabbi Solomon Friedman and his firm Ethical Capital Partners (ECP). Aylo’s holdings collectively amounted to about $52 billion in 2022.
