A majority of Democratic voters and nearly two-thirds of self-identified liberals would support Congress refusing to certify the 2024 election in favor of former President Donald Trump were he to win, a new poll has found.

The survey, conducted jointly by Rasmussen and the National Pulse between March 5th and 7th, polled 912 likely US voters about their thoughts on efforts to keep Trump from regaining the presidency. This follows a precedent-setting Supreme Court decision earlier this month determining that Congress alone, not individual states, has the right to invoke the 14th Amendment’s “Insurrection Clause” to remove a candidate from the presidential ballots. In response to the decision, multiple Congressional Democrats have pledged to refuse to certify a victory for Trump given his role in the January 6th riot.

“Some Democrats in Congress have said that if Trump wins this year’s election, they will vote against certifying the election results because of Trump’s role in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riots,” the survey asked respondents. “Do you support or oppose Democrats refusing to certify the election results if Trump wins?”

According to the results, only 35 percent of all voters supported the idea—but when broken up by party, the results varied greatly.

Predictably, Republicans would overwhelmingly reject this move by Democrats, with nearly 80 percent strongly or somewhat opposing it. 57 percent of Independents were similarly against rejecting Trump’s victory, compared to just 31 percent in favor.

However, among Democrats—the voting bloc that has long accused Trump of threatening democracy by challenging the 2020 election results—57 percent of respondents somewhat or strongly supported Congressional action to keep Trump out of the White House. For self-described liberal voters outside the Democratic Party, that number was even higher at just shy of 65 percent.

About 59 percent of Black voters, who were recorded as a separate voting bloc, also supported the move.

A majority of Democrat voters and two-thirds of liberals would support Congress refusing to certify the 2024 election in favor of Donald Trump were he to win.

Ironically, in this same poll, only 24 percent of Democrats agreed that Republicans were justified in objecting to the results of the 2020 election.

The poll also took stock of approval ratings for the Supreme Court decision itself. As a whole, 61 percent of likely voters had a positive opinion of the ruling, while 34 percent objected.

But among respondents who are also Biden voters, a staggering 72 percent believe that the court should have ruled against the former president and removed him from the ballot. Only 27 percent agree with the decision.
