Mark Zuckerberg is one of the first high profile CEO’s of a big company commenting on the COVID-19 vaccine, and he told his employees Thursday that they won’t be required to be vaccinated for the coronavirus to return to the office.
Business Insider quoted a Facebook rep saying, “Our U.S. offices remain closed and we don’t expect them to open before the COVID-19 vaccines are widely available,” they said. “At yesterday’s company Q&A, Mark said that at this point, based on what we know, we don’t think it will be necessary to require a vaccine for employees to return to work. He also said he’s confident in the vaccine and looks forward to getting one himself.”
It won’t be business as usual for the company that is now embroiled in some pretty intense legal issues after 48 states and the Justice Department filed suit against them this week. “Once we return to the office, we will have a number of protocols in place that we expect to include testing, social distancing, wearing masks and other best practices. We continue to work with many experts to define a plan that prioritizes everyone’s health and safety.”
Zuck has been a fan of the vaccine and even interviewed Dr. Anthony Fauci about it on a Facebook live stream.
For other tech behemoths in Silicon Valley, the point of whether employees will need to be vaccinated might be mute. Twitter has already told its entire workforce they have the option to continue to work at home forever if they choose.
