Here’s the thing about well-funded studies that take personal shots at things millions of people love — it only encourages the fans to support it even more. Stifel is a wealth management and investment banking firm that got out of its lane to analyze and rank fast food and fast casual restaurants that deliver the worst bang for the buck. At the top of the list is a restaurant chain that isn’t even close to being the most expensive.

Shake Shack was singled out for costing way too much for the food it’s delivering. Again, it’s not the most expensive chain, but they still were annihilated by the bean counters at Stifel, who looked at menu pricing and how customers rate the joints in terms of value.

Panera Break is the most expensive chain named in the study based on the average cost of a popular meal across 2- cities. They check in at a price of $14.76. Shake Shack was fourth at $13.50.  Chipotle, Blaze Pizza Dan Jersey Mike’s rounded out the top-5.

So let’s talk about this study. One thousand two hundred eighty people were asked this question; “ Which restaurants do you believe have become too expensive for what you get? Shake Shack took the top spot. By a lot.  Coming in second through fifth in this part of the survey were Blaze Pizza, MOD Pizza, Panera, and Chick-fil-A.

Okay, what about the chains that registered high? Mcdonald’s and Taco Bell were praised for their value.

I’m not sure who had a bone to pick with Shake Shack, but I’d like to see some data on the people participating in the study to ensure they aren’t vegetarians.
