Finally, a movie got people off their couches and into theaters around the country.

For the first time in almost two years, when the pandemic began, a movie hit blockbuster status.

“Spider-Man: No Way Home” not only crushed it at the box office with over $260 million in less than a week since it opened, but it also became the second-highest domestic opening of all time, knocking out. “Avengers: Infinity War” from 2018.

The new Spidey flick was supposed to do well, but the $260 million is even more impressive considering half the country is freaking out about Omicron and bunkering down.

Here’s what Shawn Robbins, the chief analyst for BoxOffice.com, told CNBC.

“At every turn, this movie just keeps swinging above expectations. It’s a remarkable achievement for any time and, even more so, during the pandemic.”

One reason for the mad dash to the cinema on Friday was fans wanted to see the movie before a bunch of killjoys leaked all the spoilers online. The film did over $120 million in box office Friday alone.

The movie received a ton of positive press, which led to massive crowds at theaters.

The latest installment in the Spider-Man series shows there is no end to the appetite moviegoers have for comic book movies. “Avengers: Endgame” remains the highest-grossing domestic film of all time at $257.1 million, and the only thing that can knock it down is another superhero movie when the pandemic dies down.
