To lock down or not lock down. That seems to be the questions governors across the country are being asked right now as the coronavirus pandemic continues to create challenges for politicians trying to figure out the best path forward. In two of the largest Republican-governed states, you can count on being lockdown-free, according to their governors.
As 45 of the 50 states across the country have seen coronavirus case increases of at least 10% over the past week, many governors are choosing to return to lockdowns, while Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis are saying lockdowns are not in their plans.
In a radio interview Thursday on 660 AM in Dallas, Abbott said “We are not going to have any more lockdowns in the state of Texas. Our focal point is gonna be working to heal those who have COVID, get them out of hospitals quickly, make sure they get back to their normal lives.”
In Florida, Gov. DeSantis office released a statement saying, “The governor will not lock down and hurt families who can’t afford to shelter in place for six weeks. Especially not for a virus that has a 99.8% survival rate.”
South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem has been critical of lockdowns throughout the pandemic and continues to stand by her stance, tweeting “We already know that lockdowns DON’T stop the spread of the virus. However, they destroy small businesses and jobs, and they make it difficult for families to put food on the table.”
California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom has gone the opposite direction of his Republican counterparts, placing the majority of his state back into the highest level of lockdown and coronavirus restrictions.
