First Lady Jill Biden tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday, just days before President Joe Biden’s scheduled trip to India for the G20 summit.

“This evening, the First Lady tested positive for COVID-19,” her communications director, Elizabeth Alexander, said. “She will remain at their home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.”

President Biden has a packed agenda for the upcoming G20 summit in India, where he had hoped to engage in crucial discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping. However, reports suggest that President Xi will not be attending the summit.

Additionally, President Biden is planning to travel to Hanoi after the summit, with the goal of strengthening diplomatic ties with Vietnam, according to Forbes.

The first lady’s positive COVID-19 test introduces uncertainty regarding the President’s attendance and raises questions about the willingness of world leaders and delegates to meet with him in person. The president, now 80, last tested positive in July 2022. Biden’s positive test comes at a time when the United States is grappling with a late summer surge of infections.

“Following the First Lady’s positive test for COVID-19, President Biden was administered a COVID test this evening,” the White House said. “The President tested negative. The President will test at a regular cadence this week and monitor for symptoms.”

It’s worth noting that both the President and his wife have been fully vaccinated. Further, both had previously contracted the virus approximately a year ago and had successfully recovered after receiving treatment with antiviral drugs.

The rise in positive COVID cases amongst vaccinated individuals continues to ask the question of how effective previous COVID-19 vaccines and its boosters are. Public health experts continue to emphasize the importance of vigilance and vaccination, especially with new updated vaccine shots anticipated to become available this fall.
