Being one of the biggest companies in the world and a leader in web services means you might find yourself in business with creeps, crooks and terrorists.
ISIS relies on propaganda in much of their messaging, and one of their propaganda channels, which praised and celebrated the suicide bombing at the Kabul airport uses a website and app that his hosted by Amazon Web Services.
The ISIS media group is called Nida-e-Haqq, and it pumps out propaganda in the Urdu language.
Even though Amazon has pledged to not work with terrorist groups, the Washington Post, which is owned by Jeff Bezos, quoted an executive at SITE Intelligence Group nemed Rita Katz who said AWS is hosting the site.
“It’s just mind-blowing that even after all these years, ISIS could still find a way to exploit a hosting company like Amazon. Of course, we should presume that ISIS will always be searching for ways to bypass security protocols, but this app isn’t even trying to stay low-key. It is blatantly filled with official ISIS claims, media, and logos of ISIS’ media arms, clear as day. This app was clearly created to keep ISIS’ message and content alive and distributed online. … It is clear that the stakes of keeping such content offline [are] no less major than in past years.”
Language included in AWS policy and usage paperwork specifically says the platform does not allow customers to be engaged in acts that “threaten, incite, promote, or actively encourage violence, terrorism, or other serious harm.”
Fox News reported that Amazon has disabled a website linked to the app controlled by the ISIS terrorists.
