Nothing indicates the world’s reliance on Google like a massive outage Monday morning when the global disruption to all of Google’s services had “#YouTubeDOWN” as the top Twitter trending topic in a matter of minutes.
Google’s status board became a Los Angeles freeway of red brake lights, like YouTube, Gmail, Google Drive, Google Classroom, videoconferencing and other services all went out from about 7 to 8 a.m. EST.
Millions of users could not access data on Google platforms, but the East Coast was affected the most among Americans, especially with many schools that have been pushed to online classes trying to start at that hour in Google Classroom. Mostly, it was users’ frustrations with not being able to access YouTube videos, Google Docs and Gmails. Gmail was the last area to be fully restored.
“We’re all clear folks!” Google tweeted just after 8 a.m. EST without explanation for the outage. “Thanks for staying with us.”
Did we have a choice? Everything from Twitter to Uber to Netflix to your home gadgets relies on Google daily. A common automated message read, “The server encountered a temporary error and could not complete your request. Please try again in 30 seconds.”
DownDetector reported YouTube issues peaked at more than 100,000 with them spiking at about 6:30 a.m. EST.
“Please rest assured that system reliability is a top priority at Google, and we are making continuous improvements to make our systems better,” the company said.
Sure, but your third-party advertisements kept working just fine the entire time.
