Donald Trump is ready to pull a Grover Cleveland. The 2020 election is not even over in President Trump’s eyes, but he already is reportedly eyeing a presidential run in 2024.

Axios cited two sources “familiar with the conversations” who said that Trump told advisers that he is contemplating a 2024 retry. That seems to acknowledge a loss in this election, contrary to his public claims and lawsuits.

Presidents are limited to two terms, but they do not have to be served consecutively. Only Cleveland served non-consecutive U.S. presidential terms as the 22nd and 24th president with a loss to Benjamin Harrison in between.

It provides an interesting dynamic for the Republic National Committee. Because of Trump’s tremendous, loyal following, it would be difficult for another candidate to defeat him and garner the party support in fundraising and staffing.

“I would encourage President Trump if, after all this, he does fall short,” Sen. Lindsey Graham told Fox News. “We just can’t quite get there to not let his movement die, to consider running again, to create an organization, platforms over the next four years. To keep this movement alive, growing the Republican representation in minority communities.”

Trump’s former acting White House chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney said to a Dublin think tank that Trump is “a very high-energy 74-year-old” likely to be “further engaged in 2024 or 2028 if he were to lose.”

“I would absolutely expect the president to stay involved in politics and would absolutely put him on the short list of people who are likely to run in 2024,” Mulvaney said, according to the Irish Times, as he serves as a U.S. special envoy in Northern Ireland.

Are we sure they are talking about the right Donald Trump? Donald Trump Jr. posed in front of a “Don Jr. 2024” sign in Nevada and shared the photo on Instagram for almost 300,000 likes.
