It’s a wild idea, but it just might work. As Florida Governor Ron DeSantis sees himself sinking in the polls post announcement, he’s been making a concerted effort to run to the right of former President Donald Trump. Now, DeSantis is going after the former’s president bread and butter: immigration, as Politico notes.

He was doing a flyover of the border in Texas with a Fox News reporter where the comments came swift and hard. There were unfinished pieces of the wall. “I was in Arizona the other day. You have like — wall, then it just kind of stops. If somebody were breaking into your house to do something bad, you would respond with force. Yet why don’t we do that at the Southern border? If the cartels are cutting through the border wall, trying to run product into this country, they’re going to end up stone cold dead as a result of that bad decision and if you do that one time, you are not going to see them mess with our wall ever again.”

It was a light attack, but one he’d hope would ultimately land, allowing him to attack two candidates at the same time. What DeSantis is trying to do is tie in Trump’s immigration policies with Biden’s. A recent Global Strategy Group that polled swing state voters said 58% disapprove of the way Biden is handling things. DeSantis’s argument? Trump started it.

DeSantis’s general rightward tact may be working, albeit slightly. Trump is seeing himself poll below 50% in three key primary states, with him only one point ahead (31% to 30%) of DeSantis in Wisconsin. There’s a ton of ground to make up for nationally, but state by state, his approach just might be working. We’ll check in with you to see if the momentum is permanent.
