Things are getting a little nutty in California. Dr. Michael DeBoisblanc is, or I should say was, the trauma medical director for John Muir Health in Contra Costa County. The reason he no longer has that position is that he dared to contradict or question the effectiveness of the county’s lockdown measures that have been handed down by Gov. Gavin Newsom.
A group of parents in that county were advocating for the reopening of schools, and they asked the doctor to write a letter with his opinions on whether it would be appropriate for kids to return to their classrooms. Dr. DeBoisblanc penned the letter with two other doctors. It said, in part, “The science is clear that more lockdowns lead to much more non-COVID morbidity and mortality.”
“All the data that I am aware of, looking at children and the virus, shows that it’s safe” to reopen schools, DeBoisblanc told Sandra Smith on Fox News.
“There are many other states now that have months of track records showing that it’s safe for their kids to go back to school. And the state of California and the county is just not making that possible.”
Up next in the letter is the section that probably sealed his fate, where he defended restaurants remaining open. “These are restaurants that are just trying to survive and keep their doors open,” he said. “It’s been very difficult for them.”
After all this, the county went into overdrive putting together statements that justified his firing. “The doctor is employed through an outside contract,” the official statement said, “and after careful consideration, John Muir Health is not continuing with Dr. DeBoisblanc in that position.”
Dr. DeBoisblanc remained classy about his firing, praising his co-workers as he was shown the door. “The doctors and nurses there taking care of COVID patients are risking their health every day. They just got the first round of the vaccine. And let me tell you, it’s a big relief for them.”
