Think things are bad here? Get a load of what’s happening north of the border.

A student got suspended, and then arrested, for hosting a walkout in opposition to his Catholic School’s allowance of any gender to use whichever restroom they would like, even if it designated for men or women, specifically.

Josh Alexander, of exurban Ottawa, started speaking with female classmates who said they felt uncomfortable after seeing a man’s presence in the women’s restroom. They told him they’ve seen this more than once. Alexander first approached the principal about the issue, and he was quickly dismissed out of the office.

Alexander tried to attend a class post suspension. The moment he stepped foot on school grounds, the police were called and he was arrested. Now, he is lawyering up.

While a lawsuit seems warranted, it may not go anywhere. Canada has a far more extreme anti discrimination code than the USA. The Human Rights Code of Canada says that restroom access is allowed for those with “lived gender identity”. That means, if a man identifies as a woman, he is legally allowed to enter any women’s restroom he’d like.

The Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association, which is supposed to safeguard students and teachers whose religious rights are under threat, proved to be no help to Alexander. In a statement in response to the issue, the president of the association said they “continue to add the strength of our voice in the advocacy of intersecting equity issues such as racism, ableism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia that impact our 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.”.

Those added letters are a new one! Expect them to come to the USA soon enough.
