The president of Mexico has denied that his nation produces fentanyl, sending shock waves across the US political class.

Manuel Lopez Obrador, known popularly as AMLO, has struck an autocratic tone since taking office in 2018. Promising a clean break from corrupt rule, corruption and violence under his administration has only gotten worse. He has also restricted the press pool to journalists only friendly to him, and has created a commission to take control of the next presidential election, whereas before the election had been overseen by an objective, outside group.

When asked about the fentanyl crisis at a press conference, AMLO replied, “Here, we do not produce fentanyl, and we do not have consumption of fentanyl.”

He said the crisis in the US was because of “social decay,” wiping his hands clean of any blame. He further ripped into the US saying, “We deeply lament what’s happening in the United States – but why don’t they fight the problem, and more importantly, why don’t they take care of their youth?”

However, a myriad of fentanyl has been produced in Mexico. Law enforcement staged a massive bust at one of the biggest fentanyl labs in the continent in Mexico City last decade.

Senator Lindsey Graham had harsh words saying, “We’re going to unleash the fury and might of the United States against these cartels.” Some detractors determined his statement as a call to war.

AMLO called the proposals “Robocop”.

The Biden Administration has been caught flat footed on the issue. Ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar tweeted saying the US and Mexico must coordinate together to end the fentanyl crisis just two hours before AMLO’s statement. Clearly, AMLO sees the Biden administration as one he can step on, as he quietly allows the cartel to destroy our nation
