In a recent 60 minutes interview, Google Chief Executive Sundar Pichai said, “the negative side to AI gave him restless nights” and that it should be treated with the same regulatory framework as nuclear arms treaties.

What makes this extra concerning is that there’s few people with more insight on the impact of AI as the Google leadership. People like this know far more than the public in regard to what the future of AI has in store.

Last month, Elon Musk and thousands of artificial intelligence experts signed a letter calling for a pause in the creation of “giant” AIs for at least six months, citing concerns that development of the technology could get out of control.

ELON MUSK IS WORRIED ABOUT AI GETTING OUT OF CONTROL….

Is there anybody who has been more optimistic about AI than Elon Musk? If Elon is scared of AI everybody should be.

The unfortunate thing is that mankind is literally incapable of pausing innovation and technological advancement. Even if know something can kill us, we still build it because we don’t want our enemies to have it first.

Other who signed the letter include Emad Mostaque, founder of Stability AI, Steve Wozniak, engineers from Amazon, DeepMind, Google, Meta and Microsoft.

The letter says:

“Recent months have seen AI labs locked in an out-of-control race to develop and deploy ever more powerful digital minds that no one, not even their creators can understand, predict, or reliably control. Powerful AI systems should be developed only once we are confident that their effects will be positive, and their risks will be manageable. If researchers will not voluntarily pause their work on AI models more powerful than GPT-4, then governments should step in. This does not mean a pause on AI development in general, merely a stepping back from the dangerous race to ever-larger unpredictable black-box models with emergent capabilities.”

When Elon Musk is asking for government regulation on AI, the government should take notice. Let’s hope that this is handled wisely, but humans don’t normally handle these situations wisely. We’re in a Fourth Turning, so we’re due for a few years of war and economic crisis. It would be ironic if the war ended up being against machines instead of Russia and China.

Interesting times!

Sincerely,

Brandon
