Title 42 ends at midnight tonight. And migrants are flooding the US border as reaching that land seems much more feasible now. Title 42 states that because of Covid, asylum seekers would have to be processed outside of the US and wait until their request would be approved. In the three years since the policy has been put in place, 3 million asylum seekers have been turned away at the border.
In regular circumstances, asylum seekers would be permitted to wait in the USA.
This news comes after leaked documents showed that Border Patrol was ordered to release thousands migrants without tracking them. They were told do this if a shelter was at 125% capacity of more.
The Biden administration has sent some troops to the border to control the situation, but it hasn’t been doing much. And the app migrants are directed to use, which would streamline the asylum process electronically, is hopelessly glitchy and dysfunctional.
Still, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said, “Our plan will deliver results. But it will take time to be fully realized.”
On Tuesday alone, 10,000 migrants were stopped in Brownsville, creating a much larger surge than usual.
And we’re still waiting on the results. I wouldn’t hold your breath.
