Pay attention to the lyrics of Taylor Swift’s next few songs—she might be planting some hidden phrases regarding the sale of her entire catalog of her first six albums.
A little over a year ago, Ithaca Holdings, which is a company owned by A-list music manager Scooter Braun, acquired Big Machine Label Group. Why is that important? Because Big Machine was a Nashville talent agency that represented some of the biggest names in country music, including Swift. On Monday, it was learned that Braun had sold that Big Machine Catalog to a private equity firm called Shamrock Holdings for $300 million, a fact that Billboard confirmed.
When news came out that Braun’s company had acquired the catalog initially in 2019, Swift took a very aggressive stance on social media, which Braun said led to death threats against him and his family. Now that Swift’s early songs have no chance of staying with her, it would be safe to expect more public feuding between the scorned singer and the big-time manager that represents and discovered Justin Bieber, among many other huge stars.
“Scooter’s team wanted me to sign an ironclad NDA stating I would never say another word about Scooter Braun unless it was positive, before we could even look at the financial records of BMLG (which is always the first step in a purchase of this nature),” she wrote. “So, I would have to sign a document that would silence me forever before I could even have a chance to bid on my own work,” Swift said in a statement.
Swift then stated that her team received a letter from Shamrock Holdings informing her the company had bought all of her music, the videos and album art from Braun. “This was the second time my music had been sold without my knowledge. The letter told me that they wanted to reach out before the sale to let me know, but that Scooter Braun had required that they make no contact with me or my team or the deal would be off. I was hopeful and open to the possibility of a partnership with Shamrock, but Scooter’s participation is a non-starter for me.”
Since Braun’s deal which gave him full ownership of Swift’s catalog, she has released two new albums, “ Lover “in 2019 and “Folklore” in 2020.
She fully owns both of those.
