Thanksgiving is next week and like most families, what to expect on the menu is the main topic in the family group chat. Have you noticed the to-do list has everyone providing a dish but you? Maybe the family doesn’t want to hurt your feelings and tell you your cornbread dressing is not good. Perhaps they’re more straightforward like my family and told you to stay out of the kitchen for lack of cooking skills. Either way, you want to help, but how?

You could spend time with the family or continue online shopping ahead of Black Friday. If you feel guilty about not doing anything, here are a few suggestions to help you feel useful this holiday season.

Grab a mop and vacuum. You are officially on cleaning duty. The holiday chef always needs help ensuring the kitchen stays organized or clean while cooking. You could also ensure the rest of the house is clean before the guests arrive.

Get creative with the dinner table decor. Pinterest and Amazon have plenty of ideas to inspire you.

Provide entertainment. Family from all over is more likely to travel this holiday season. Talking and checking in on family pairs well with music and games. There’s always Monopoly, Uno, Charades, and Taboo. If you want a new game to play, Not Parent Approved is the top board game to play, according to bestproducts.com.

The last duty for the non-cooker is bartending. Be sure to show off your skills with a cocktail menu. Provide options for family and friends who don’t drink alcohol. Make sure there’s juice and water for the children, and please do not forget the ice.
