Newly released bodycam footage shows the shocking moments after a 6-year-old shot his first-grade teacher in Virginia.
In January 2023, a first-grader at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News shot his teacher, Abby Zwerner, in the classroom. The footage, sealed for more than three years and released this week, shows a reading specialist holding the boy down as police rush in, and the child immediately cursing at officers, daring them to fight him, and admitting he stole the gun from his mom. He tells police he doesn’t care if they call backup or if he goes to jail.
On camera, the reading specialist tells officers the school had been warned about a threat involving the boy earlier that day. Zwerner survived the shooting and later won a $10 million civil verdict after a jury found a former school administrator ignored warnings that the child may have had a gun.
