The covid pandemic changed many things after March 2020. The more popular trend still in demand right now is remote job opportunities. Two years later we are seeing some major takeaways good and bad from the Work from Home revolution.
Economists say working from home likely played a major role in a mini-baby boom in 2021 in the U.S.
A working paper created by three economists released their findings earlier this week. They found work flexibility helped increase the birth rates last year by 6.2% compared to pre-pandemic years. Baby making was most popular among first time parents and women under 25. Baby rates also increased in women ages 30 to 34 and those 25 to 44 with a college degree. Numbers showed the women with college degrees were more likely to keep their job during the pandemic thanks to the remote work model.
Whether planned or unexpected this finding seems somewhat obvious. More time home with a significant other with nothing else to do tends to leave more time for making children without the stress of requesting maternity leave or paying for childcare.
A second take away from the work from home revolution is not as positive. A new study done by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, shows workers are in the U.S. are taking advantage of the working from home by working less and sleeping and playing more. The study revealed Americans under the age of 30 invested time normally used on commuting to engage in eating out, exercising, or attending social events. Americans over the age of 30 used the time on childcare, home maintenance and meal prep. This study could explain why your employer is pushing back and demanding your presence in the office.
The last noticed takeaway, despite employees not doing their job companies are profiting by operating from home and selling expensive office spaces. Fox Business reports businesses that decided to never fully return to in-person models created a surge of vacant big city office buildings. This in turn has created a historic opportunity for real estate.
