Tim Cook is not Elon Musk. The Apple CEO doesn’t tell the world everything he’s thinking, feeling and doing on social media. He’s not spending parts of his day conjuring up clever tweets that tweak and mystify.
So, when Cook sits down for a podcast interview, the tech world pays close attention to find out what Apple is up to.
Monday Cook appeared on the “Sway” podcast and spent some time talking about the autonomous vehicle plans his company has.
“The autonomy itself is a core technology, in my view. If you sort of step back, the car, in a lot of ways, is a robot. An autonomous car is a robot. And so there’s lots of things you can do with autonomy. And we’ll see what Apple does,” Cook said.
He’s good at being nebulous. And he was just warming up with his non-answer answers.
“We investigate so many things internally. Many of them never see the light of day. I’m not saying that one will not.”
So Tim, what about Apple’s plans for an EV. How are they coming? “We love to integrate hardware, software, and services, and find the intersection points of those because we think that’s where the magic occurs. And so that’s what we love to do. And we love to own the primary technology that’s around that,” Cook said.
It’s like conducting an interview with a press release. The host tried, but Cook was keeping his grill closed as it pertains to substantive details.
The EV world is holding their breath eating to find out who Apple will collab with to build their version, and watch the fireworks as Apple would go head-to-head with Tesla.
In 2020, Musk said that he wanted to discuss the option of selling the company to Apple, but Cook would not take a meeting with him at the time to talk about.
So, what about that Tim? “You know, I’ve never spoken to Elon, although I have great admiration and respect for the company he’s built. I think Tesla has done an unbelievable job of not only establishing the lead, but keeping the lead for such a long period of time in the EV space. So I have great appreciation for them.”
Okay. Maybe next time we’ll actually learn something about what Apple is up to.
