Another trend is growing on TikTok, and this one smells wrong. Holistic Healers are sharing their use of onion therapy to prevent and cure sickness. According to Insider, TikTok influencers like @Poshmama or the “onion lady,” cutting up onions and sitting them around your house will pull toxins, bacteria, and bacteria out of the air. Another user claims putting an onion under her child’s bed helped them to sleep through the night. She also claims drinking onion water helps with your health journey.

Many followers are now trying the stinky trend, but your home could just smell bad for no good reason. The Insider spoke with public health experts who say there is no proven truth to claims that onions are a cure-all vegetable. One expert says consuming onions may lower the severity of sickness, but placing them around your home will not prevent it.

According to Insider, a recent study shows 20% of TikToks include misinformation. Of that 20%, most of the misinformation is health-related. Some misinformation is much more harmful than onion water and placing them throughout your home. Doctors had to warn against homemade recipes for baby formula found on TikTok during the baby formula shortage. Even more concerning, after the Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade, many people headed to TikTok to either post or find abortive herbal treatments. One expert points out the app became very popular during the pandemic, a time when people were vulnerable and likely wanted to regain power over their health.

Onions as a home remedy are nothing new. The treatment was also popular during the Bubonic plague. We’re not saying these home remedies don’t work, but we’re definitely not saying they do. Because a study shows for every five posts on TikTok, one contains misinformation, I’m saying consult with a legitimate doctor first.
