Steve Jobs was amazing on many levels, including the fact that a man so influential, successful, and high profile did a great job keeping his personal life private. Would you know the names of his children if somebody asked you? Or what they are doing now?
His 31-year-old son Reed Jobs is making news for what he is doing now, and it has nothing to do with Silicon Valley or the tech industry. But like his father, the younger Jobs is innovative. He is launching a venture capital firm to invest in new cancer treatments.
Unfortunately, Steve Jobs’s son has been exposed to the effects of cancer for most of his life, considering his father was diagnosed with the disease he eventually died from when Reed was just 12 years old. According to a story in DealBook, watching what happened to his father motivated his interest in oncology.
The firm he is part of is called “Yosemite,” which is an homage to the sight where his parents got married. Several big-name investors and institutions are lining up to be involved, and the firm has already raised $200 million from the likes of venture capitalist John Doerr, Rockefeller University, MIT, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
Reed’s mother, the widow of Steve Laurene Powell Jobs, is involved — Yosemite is a spinoff of her business and philanthropic organization, Emerson Collective.
Reed’s firm will include a non-profit business and a donor-advised fund, with ambitious goals to fight cancer by providing grants to scientists studying treatments and potential cures.
