On his last deployment to Jordan, Dan Simmons says one of his twin daughters was so upset he was leaving again during her senior year that she told him, “Dad, don’t talk to me, don’t text me, don’t call me until you’re home.”

He explains how brutal that was mentally in a combat zone, but later sat her down to say he fully understands her pain while asking her to remember who and what her father is—because other husbands, brothers, and fathers got to come home to their families precisely because he was willing to be gone and she was willing to make that sacrifice.
