The U.S. Energy Department is the latest group that believes the COVID pandemic was man-made and came from a laboratory leak in China. Just think, having that expert opinion a couple of years ago could have gotten the agency banned from Twitter.

The conclusion is based on classified intelligence the White House and key members of Congress just got a look at. One question they will have to answer is why it took this long to gain scientific evidence about a lab leak when that is what our intelligence agencies are supposed to figure out a lot sooner.

This is stunning news, and it comes over a year after the FBI concluded it was a lab accident in China that launched the disease to the world and eventually killed a reported 6,8 million people, including 1.1 million in the United States.

The Wall Street Journal reported the story first. An interesting aspect of their report is that the Energy Department made their determination of the lab leak with “low confidence.” The FBI put the phrase “moderate confidence” around their findings.

Here’s the difference, though — the Energy Department doesn’t hand out opinions loosely. They oversee our nuclear weapons program, run a network of national labs, and are experts in numerous scientific fields.

Joe Biden’s White House added its glorious spin to the story. White House National Security Adviser Jake Sulivan was asked about the new findings, and here’s his answer.

“President Biden has directed, repeatedly, every element of our intelligence community to put effort and resources behind getting to the bottom of this question. And if we gain any further insight or information, we will share it with Congress, and we will share it with the American people. But right now, there is not a definitive answer that has emerged from the intelligence community on this question.”

We’ll look forward to that.
