Spotify is ramping up its A.I. capabilities with the launch of a new DJ feature, providing additional commentary on its selections.

The music streaming service is delving deeper into the rapidly emerging artificial intelligence field, following other notable products like Microsoft’s ChatGPT-powered Bing, as an established leader in personalized music curation.

Tweet announcement posted by Spotify:

Spotify has revealed the beta release of its “DJ” feature, which is described as a personalized as part AI guide and part commentator, complete with a “realistic voice” that provides insights on tracks and artists it serves.

Just like Spotify’s comprehensive custom playlist offerings, the mixes revisit users’ old favorites and current hits, and also introduces new tunes based on data. DJ provides commentary every few songs or whenever summoned through the “DJ” button, according to a Spotify spokesperson, and tracks user habits to optimize the listening experience.

A spokesperson for Spotify said, “Culturally relevant insights about a user’s favorite artists may overlap,” adding “with those provided to others.”

According to Gizmodo, Spotify drew on its recent acquisition of Sonantic, a London-based A.I. voice platform, to power DJ. Writers in-house will be developing the scripts.

Spotify subscribers should be able to locate DJ in the Music feed on the mobile app.

Initially, the feature will only be accessible to premium subscribers in the United States and Canada.

DJ’s voice is based on that of a real human and Spotify’s head of cultural partnerships, Xavier “X” Jernigan, who previously hosted the morning show “The Get Up.” The firm dubbed him the DJ’s “first model” and stated that it will continue to enhance the feature.

This will be yet another A.I. creation that can be incredibly beneficial and easy for users, but also potentially detrimental for those creators making a living from making music mixes. Time will tell.
