Amazon must not care that much about being first in various business endeavors; they seem to be more obsessed with being the best, or at the very least, most profitable.

The company is pumping hundreds of millions into content creation to compete with Apple, Netflix, and Hulu directly, and now they have another iconic tech company in their crosshairs; SpaceX.

It’s a race to see who can control the wifi service in space, and Amazon will spend billions to try to have their satellite become the market leader in satellite and internet service.

It’s called “Project Kuiper,” and it’s the Amazon version of Starling, the intergalactic wi-fi service created by SpaceX.  Amazon will fire off 83 rockets into space in the next five years to add to a fleet of 300 satellites circling in space.  The plan is for Amazon to provide internet service to users worldwide.

Add this to the long-running and very public spat between Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX, and Jeff Bezos, who created Amazon. You may recall that when NASA awarded a $3 billion contract to SpaceX, Bezos and his rocket company, Blue Origin, sued NASA but lost.  That’s what prompted Musk to tweet “Can’t get it up lol” in a direct dig at Jeff Bezos and the shape of his Blue Origin rocket.

Amazon certainly can’t be first in the wifi business beamed down from space; the Starling service already has 1,900 satellites floating around in space.
