Stand-up comedian Shane Gillis’s new Netflix special Shane Gillis: Beautiful Dogs was released on Tuesday and has held the streaming service’s number one spot for two consecutive days, topping daily TV rankings among American audiences.

This serves to mark his full 180-degree comeback from his cancellation by Saturday Night Live (SNL) in 2019 to now being more popular than anything else on Netflix.

Gillis was fired only four days after joining SNL when an old clip of his resurfaced in which he makes jokes about Chinatown, New York and Chinese people.

“After talking with Shane Gillis, we have decided he will not be joining SNL,” a spokesperson for SNL creator and producer Lorne Michaels said at the time. “We want SNL to have a variety of voices and points of view within the show, and we hired Shane on the strength of his talent as comedian and his impressive audition for SNL. We were not aware of his prior remarks that have surfaced over the past few days. The language is offensive, hurtful and unacceptable. We are sorry we did not see these clips earlier, and that our vetting process was not up to standard.”

Gillis’s cancelling was facilitated by Seth Simons, a left-wing activist and blog writer who dug up the clip of Shane and helped bring it to SNL’s attention.

Gillis took to Twitter to respond to the clip that at that pointed had gone vial. “I’m a comedian who pushes boundaries. I sometimes miss. If you go through my 10 years of comedy, most of it bad, you’re going to find a lot of bad misses. I’m happy to apologize to anyone who’s actually offended by anything I’ve said,” he wrote. But that was not enough, and SNL terminated him shortly thereafter.

Shane Gillis is from Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. His comedy career began when he won Philly’s Funniest at Helium Comedy Club in 2016. He was named an “Up-Next” Comic at Comedy Central’s 2019 Clusterfest in San Francisco and a “New Face” at the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal. Gillis is known for being a host on “Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast” and his 2021 debut comedy special Shane Gillis: Live in Austin on YouTube which has received over 14 million views.
