As we take the day to honor the men and women who have served their country, it is essential to reflect on if the U.S. is doing enough to serve veterans once they transition to civilian life.

A new WalletHub survey found that 71% of military members believe we do not care for veterans. The WalletHub study also shows more than 18.5 million veterans live in the U.S. Of those millions, Navy Federal says 250,000 military members transition out of the service annually. While we may need to do more, some cities are doing better than others when it comes to thinking of veterans.

As a service, WalletHub has conducted a study to find the top places for veterans to live after retiring from the military. Raleigh, North Carolina, is considered the number one city for veterans. The city earns the best overall score for employment, economy, health, and quality of life for veterans. Raleigh also has the third-lowest number of homeless veterans. Virginia Beach, Virginia, has the least number of homeless veterans.

Austin and Laredo, Texas, are a few other top cities to consider living if you are a veteran. The cities rank number 2 and 3 on the list for high scores in local job market quality of life and veteran income growth. Madison, Wisconsin, ranks fourth as the best city for veterans, followed by Tampa, Florida. If you’re preparing to retire from the military, here is the full list of city rankings and things to consider when choosing a place to stay.
