Say what you want about Bill Belichick, but he’s a hell of a lot more entertaining when his New England Patriots suck. Take Tuesday for instance, when he made his weekly appearance on WEEI Radio in Boston and a very important topic took center stage during the segment.

Not an injury update on key players or a scouting report on the Baltimore Ravens, who face the Pats on Sunday. No, the hosts asked the coach widely regarded as the best in the history of the NFL why he doesn’t drink coffee. “Because I don’t like coffee,” was the future Hall of Famer’s reply.

Okay coach, would you care to elaborate a little on that? “Look, I mean I understand I am probably missing it, but I just don’t like coffee. I can’t stand the smell of coffee. I don’t like coffee ice cream, and I like every sweet that has ever been made but that’s not one of them. I don’t like coffee-flavored anything. I don’t know. I just don’t have the taste for it. I’ve tried, but it just doesn’t work for me. My grandmother put a glass of milk and poured like probably a thimble of coffee and I couldn’t even drink that. It’s just one of those things I didn’t develop a taste for.”

At this point in the interview, it may have occurred to Belichick that while he’s in the middle of his rant against java, Dunkin’ Donuts is actually based right there in Boston.

“Nothing against coffee. Nothing against Dunkin’ Donuts. Nothing against anything, it’s just not for me. I don’t have a taste for scotch, either.”

I know what you’re wondering. Where does he get all that energy he’s famous for? “I drink orange juice,” he revealed. “I can drink tea. I like tea. I’ve got a lot of other vices to make up for it, so [drinking coffee is] one of the few I don’t have.”

This version of Belichick is much more fun than the one who once said, “We’re on to Cincinnati.” Five times in a row!
