Princess of Wales Kate Middleton, who had been absent from the public eye for months, has announced that she has been diagnosed with cancer and will be undergoing chemotherapy.

Middleton, 42, broke the news with a video posted to her social media accounts on Friday afternoon.

The surgery was successful. However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventive chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment,” she said in her statement. “This of course came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family.”

She also added that she is “well and getting stronger everyday by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirits.”

“We hope you that you’ll understand that as a family we now need some time, space, and privacy while I complete my treatment,” Middleton said, addressing the paparazzi and social media users who have fueled wild speculations regarding her whereabouts.

“My work has always brought be a deep sense of joy, and I look forward to being back when I’m able. But for now I must focus on making a full recovery.”

She concluded by saying all those who have been diagnosed with cancer—including King Charles, which was announced just weeks ago—are in her thoughts.

This is a developing story. Check back later for more updates.
