One of the scarier prospects of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is the thought that some rogue Russian troops would have control of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which is in Ukraine.

That’s one fear that appears to have been alleviated, as the International Atomic Energy Agency said control o the plant is back in the hands of Ukraine’s trained professionals.

Russian forces had controlled the plant since February 24, but the transfer was officially made and signed by all parties.

The Russian military forces who had been guarding it for the past month may have been exposed to high doses of radiation while being in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.

The U.S. intelligence agencies have been monitoring the situation, and they concur with the reports that Ukraine is back in control of the plant.

Here’s what Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said.

“We have seen indications that some Russian forces are departing the Chernobyl plant facility, We gather that they are leaving to the north to go back again towards Belarus. But again, indications are not completely clear at this time.”
