A recent nationwide poll suggests that nearly 1/2 of Americans believe former President Donald Trump should be charged with a crime for his role in the Jan. 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol in 2021.
48% of adults nationwide say Trump should be charged for his role in the January 6th attack involving right-wing extremists.
31% of those questioned said the former president should not be charged, with 1 in 5 saying they don’t know enough to have an opinion.
The poll was conducted following the 5 public hearings by the Democratic dominated House select committee investigating the riot at the Capitol – which aims to produce testimony showing Trump’s potential criminal culpability in fueling the attack.
The survey taken ahead of Tuesday’s last-minute hearing by the committee featured former Trump White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson.
Democrats VS Republicans
86% of Democrats who participated in the survey believed Trump should be convicted. Republicans who participated believe that he should not be convicted by a 68%-10% margin.
Independents were more split, with 38% unsure and 36% saying the former president should be charged.
A quarter of independents who participated believe he should not be charged.
58% of all respondents said they believe Trump is responsible for the attack on the Capitol.
According to the poll, 42% of Americans say they’ve watched or listened to the hearings.
Of the participants, 57% said they are not watching or listening to the hearings. Two-thirds of independents and just over 7 in 10 Republicans say they haven’t watched or listened to the hearings.
