United States Senator Dianne Feinstein, the longest-serving member of the U.S. Senate, passed away after suffering from extensive health issues for over a year. Feinstein was 90 years old.

The longest-serving female senator in California announced back in February that she planned to retire at the end of her term. She previously faced calls for her resignation over concerns about her mental and physical health.

According to congressional records, Feinstein managed to be present at the Senate on Wednesday and cast a vote at 11:45 a.m. However, she missed two votes later in the afternoon.

According to Balllotpedia, vacancies are temporarily filled by gubernatorial appointments in 37 states, meaning that California Governor Gavin Newsom will appoint a temporary successor until the next statewide general election is held.

Feinstein managed to post her last tweet on X, formerly Twitter, Thursday evening, focusing on the Azerbaijan targeting the Nagorno-Karabakh region, depriving more than 120,000 Christian Armenians from the critical resources needed to survive.

A prominent figure in American politics, Feinstein dedicated her life to public service. A San Francisco native, Feinstein’s political career began when she was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1969.

She rose to national prominence when she served as Mayor of San Francisco after the tragic assassination of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk in 1978.

In 1992, Feinstein achieved another milestone by becoming the first woman to represent California in the United States Senate. She has also played key roles in various committees, including chairing the Senate Intelligence Committee during crucial periods in national security.

Throughout her career, Feinstein has been recognized for her pragmatic and bipartisan approach to governance, earning respect on both sides of the aisle.

Her legacy was a testament to her commitment to making the United States a better place for all its citizens, and her tireless efforts to address the most pressing issues of our time.
