Actress Debra Messing is not shy about her disdain for Donald Trump, and her recent tweets about the president have her facing plenty of backlash, as she hoped for Trump to be raped in prison.

In a tweet last week, Messing responded to a note from World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praising German Chancellor Angela Merkel for her calls on Germans to stay home amid the coronavirus pandemic. Messing exclaimed, “AMERICA. THIS is a LEADER,” and then continued, “[Donald Trump], you are a weak, scared, stupid, inept, negligent, vindictive, narcissistic, criminal. I hope you live a long life in prison where you become the most popular boyfriend to the all [sic] inmates.”

On Monday, Messing seemed to double down on the tweet, saying, “Let me be clear: I said nothing about LGBTQI/queer LOVE. Rape is an act of violence. Trump has perpetrated violence on hundreds of millions of people. My hope is (and this is the first time in my life) that the tables are turned and he is the victim of perpetrators.”

The follow-up tweet received significantly more backlash as people criticized her for taking rape so lightly and wishing such a horrible act on anyone. After facing a wave of social-media criticism calling her “ignorant” and “homophobic,” Messing returned to Twitter to apologize just hours after doubling down.

“I’d like to say I have been an LGBTQIA ally for decades, and I was in no way referencing LGBTQI/queer love/sexuality. It is not my proudest moment, but 45 has victimized 100s of millions of ppl; I had wished the tables turned on him. I apologize for the offensive way I did it.”
